Graduation is only weeks away for millions of college students throughout the country. But are they walking out of school with a meaningless degree?

A new list published by Newsweek Magazine has ranked the most and least useful college majors based on data showing employment rates and salary directly following graduation.UCSB doesn’t offer all of the majors mentioned by Newsweek. These subjects are on the list and offered by UCSB, in order of “uselessness” according to Newsweek:

1. Fine Art
2. Theater and Dance
3. Film and Media Studies
4. Philosophy and Religious Studies
5. English
6. Anthropology
7. Music
8. History
9. Political Science

“To be completely frank, I think that it’s a useless study,” Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts, David Marshall said. “The whole point of a liberal arts education is that it prepares you for any job that you might go on to.”

DUH!!! Hire For Keeps!!! NO MORE QUICK FIXES!!

“A DUH MOMENT” Companies are hiring Permanent Placements over Temp Fillers –> avoiding the stepping stone affect –> improving retention.

When more jobs are avaialble and people have choices that FIT their experience (or potential!), they climb into progressive roles as oppossed to desperate positions or temp positions. Which, quite simply, they stay much longer.

HIRE FOR RETENTION!!
Do you know how much it costs to bring on a brand new employee??? The training alone?? They don’t just slow down the tasks they’re assigned to but they slow everyone else around them down as well.

Even if you’re hiring through an agency, get your candidates screened!!! Make sure they are as amazing in real life than they are on paper. You don’t have to settle for mediocre employees anymore. Times are changing.

PROMISE!! I see it everyday!

Hire for the long haul and avoid rehire after rehire after rehire!!  DUH!

If Opportunities Aren’t Knocking, Build Another Door!!!!

A famous comedian, Milton Berle, once said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” Maybe this was said in jest, but there is a deep philosophical meaning to this statement that I think can be applied to today’s business environment. We can’t just sit here waiting for things to get better. We have to make things get better through our actions.

There is no doubt that the markets, both globally and locally, have changed dramatically over the past few months. Retail sales in many sectors are falling and we’ve seen an increase in unemployment and cost of living indexes; especially in the volatile food, energy and health care markets, costs have increased significantly.

It’s Time For You To Quit Following Your Peers And Start Your Own Branding Campaign!!!

What is it that all successful companies have mastered — and what job-seekers looking to advance in their careers need to master? What is it about Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Starbucks, Disney, and McDonald’s? What makes a consumer buy one product over another — and makes one job-seeker much more sought after than others? The answer is marketing, but more specifically it is the power of branding. And branding isn’t just for products anymore.

Branding can be described as many things, but it’s best defined as a promise… a promise of the value of the product… a promise that the product is better than all the competing products… a promise that must be delivered to be successful. Branding is the combination of tangible and intangible characteristics that make a brand unique. Branding is developing an image — with results to match.

Branding (some call it self-branding or personal branding when talking about individuals) is essential to career advancement because branding helps define who you are, how you are great, and why you should be sought out. Branding is your reputation. Branding is about building a name for yourself, showcasing what sets you apart from others, and describing the added value you bring to a situation.

Run Out of Maximum Unemployment Benefits??

05/08/12 2:15 p.m.

Updated: Number of individuals who have run out of benefits is now over 677,000.

One of the extension programs, typically the final round of extensions known as the FED-ED here in California, is now coming to an end. The state Employment Development Department (EDD) has been notified by the U.S. Department of Labor that the state no longer meets the minimum criteria for providing FED-ED extension benefits. While California’s total unemployment rate remains high, the three month average is not 10% higher than it was during the same three month period during one of the last three years as required by the federal program.

That means the week ending May 12, 2012, will be the last week EDD can pay FED-ED benefits to eligible unemployed workers, even if someone has a remaining balance on their FED-ED extension. The EDD estimates about 93,000 people in California will be immediately impacted, including those collecting FED-ED benefits now and those who could qualify to file a new FED-ED extension up through May 6, 2012.

The EDD has sent notices to these affected individuals to alert them to the situation and ensure they are aware of this federally mandated end to the FED-ED program. The notices include information and references to other government resources and social services to assist these long – term unemployed workers. In addition, we have developed and are updating some frequently asked questions for FED-ED on the FAQ – Extended Unemployment Benefits page.
